Being "Young Farmers"

We had a great time on our "mini-getaway" this weekend. It was a "Young Farmers Workshop" put on by our local co-op. We learned some good stuff, hopefully some of which will help us increase our profits for 2009, and some other general info and things we need to be doing. Another bonus of this meeting is that its the same people invited every year. They added a new group this year, but most of the people that were there last year returned this year so it was great to catch up. Its tough being so "young" in an industry where the average age is probably 50 or 60. So things like this where we can connect with other people who are our own age and doing the same thing are really great. It makes you feel not quite so alone, you know? Especially since we live in an area that is not a huge farming area. There are a few other farmers of course, but its definitely a relatively "unique" occupation to have around here-and we are by far the youngest people farming in our county.

I've gotten used to the reactions I get when people ask what my husband does and I tell them he's a full-time farmer. Mostly I get a kick out of it b/c people are often so surprised. They always want to know more about what we do, what we grow, how early we get up (that one makes me laugh b/c if you're not milking cows, you generally don't have to get up at 4 am, but its one of those "farmer stereotypes" that people hold on to!) But would you believe that probably the most common comment I get is "Wow, you are a good wife to let him do that." This one boggles my mind. How many people do you know who "let" their spouse do whatever job it is they do? I mean, say my husband was a teacher...or I don't know, a "businessman" of some sort...would they still say that? I highly doubt it. Kelly has wanted to farm since probably before he could walk. My in-laws tell me stories about how he would play in his sandbox all day long with toy tractors, "tilling" and "planting" fields in the sand. I don't think he ever even considered doing anything else. This is his dream. I knew that when I married him. Heck, I knew it before we started dating. Who am I to take that dream away from him?? I mean, sure, maybe if it was a random thing where one day he just woke up and said, honey, I think we should become farmers. haha. But he has put his life, his heart and soul, into this. He works incredibly hard, not just physically but mentally too, always thinking, always planning, running numbers, coming up with ideas, reading and talking to other farmers to learn more and figure out how to do a better job. He definitely is not doing this halfheartedly. But I think so many people have this "stereotype" of farming in their head. They don't make any money. They're not bright enough to do anything else. They're uneducated, uncultured, etc. So not true. Its like any other business of your own. Sure, when you're starting out, its tough. But ask anyone who has started their own business if it was all sunshine and roses and money pouring in the first few years. I'm betting they'll say no, it was tough. And I'm betting there are still times when its certainly not easy. Being your own boss has its benefits and its drawbacks, regardless of what industry you're in. And the stereotype of being uneducated? Um, definitely not! Farmers...good farmers...are some of the smartest people I know. I am amazed almost daily at the things my husband knows and can do. Seriously!

Sure, he gets dirty. Really dirty. Would you like to see my laundry room? haha And yes, he works hard and long hours and there are certain times of year where I really don't see him much(spring, fall...summer, winter...hmmm..wait a minute. haha) And sure, its stressful and we don't get to take spontaneous weekend getaways...heck, sometimes we can't make plans for a day together until that morning when we look out and realize, hey its raining, lets go do something relaxing! But its a good life. I come home to a happy husband. Okay, a lot of days I come home to a tired and stressed husband too, but when its all said and done, he's happy because he's doing what he loves. And believe it or not, I love it too. This is the life I always wanted. The girl who grew up on 5 whole acres with a few sheep in her barn to show at the fair...and knew very little about agriculture until she walked into the ag dorm at Ohio State in September of 1998. Always wanted to be a farmer's wife. Another story for another post I suppose :) But here we are. And sure, sometimes we think, wow, I can't believe we're doing this...and are we the only young people dumb enough to choose this profession? But then we do things like we did last weekend and go out, meet other people our age who are doing the same thing. Who love farming and couldn't imagine doing anything else. Who struggle with the same issues we do, but keep at it because its more than a job, its a life. And a good one at that. And it reminds us that yep, this is it. This is what we do, who we are. And we wouldn't want to do anything else.

Can I blame it on 'pregnancy brain'??

The car is fixed and I am officially an idiot :) Turns out it was the darn security system. Aleros have this problem often, from what I read online. And the thing is, we've had it happen before! And yet....I didn't recognize it as the same. Oops. For some reason, the security system decides its had some sort of breach of security or whatever, and shuts off the fuel pump so that the car won't start. To fix it, you have to turn the key to 'on', let it sit there for like 10 minutes, turn the key back to off and then try to start it. And then it starts right up. But I could have SWORN that the last time it did this (oh, probably 9 months ago or so), it didn't even turn over...and this time it was turning over, so I was sure that couldn't possibly be the problem. I should have tried it though b/c apparently, it was. Ugh. Oh well. Worst thing is I just look like an idiot. On the bright side, it only cost us $20 at the mechanic to figure out what the problem was. Oh yeah, and that part we bought...but hey, now we have an extra 'ignition control module' just in case. hahahahaha I haven't blamed anything on that supposed "pregnancy brain" thing they say people get yet, so I am going to blame this one on that (even though I still don't quite buy into the 'pg brain'...I just know I'm a bit dumb sometimes, but nobody else needs to know that! LOL)

So now tomorrow we are off to Indianapolis for our "Young Ag Leaders Workshop" or whatever its called. Its put on by the local cooperative (which is where we buy a lot of our chemicals, fertilizer, feed, etc. for the farm), for young farmers. Its all people our age (20-40 yrs old or so, which is young for the agriculture industry) and they put us up in the Hyatt overnight for free, feed us good food, open bar, etc. and have numerous workshops and speakers addressing issues that we might be facing in our farming businesses. We went last year and had a great time meeting other farmers our age who were facing the same issues, and we learned quite a bit too. We're looking forward to seeing a lot of the same people again, and just having sort of one last 'getaway' as a couple before the baby arrives! Should be fun!

Go away black cloud!

I swear there is a black cloud following me. So, remember how our furnace broke on Christmas? We've been heating our house with wood, which has been fine (well, except that Kelly has to find the time to chop wood almost everyday, oh and did I mention that some idiots stole our chainsaws a few months ago and the one we got from my dad in the meantime wasn't working until yesterday? Yeah. Nice.) Anyway...so our house has been warm and cozy thanks to my wonderful hubby...however, obviously we needed to replace the furnace. So, we got estimates and we'll be getting a brand new, 90% efficiency (old one was about 60% they tell us) gas furnace, with a whole house humidifier and some fancy air filter. Couple thousand dollars. Awesome. But on the bright side, it should make a huge difference in our gas bill and the humidifier will be awesome since our house is SO dry in the winter and we shouldn't have to get another furnace for probably 25 years or so. So, there is some good in it. Its being installed today, yay!! That will be nice!

So, we got the furnace stuff figured out and we're thinking okay...that was a huge unexpected expense, but you know, long term investment in the house, its all good. On Saturday I went to get new tires put on my car. They put them on, pull the car back out of the garage, I pay and am on my way. Well, almost. Car won't start. Fabulous. Turns over. Just won't start. I call Kelly, and luckily the tire place is like 5 minutes away so even though he's in the middle of feeding cattle (in the rain, of course), he comes to my rescue. One of the tire place employees uses a computer to try to figure out the problem and he and Kelly come to the conclusion that its likely this 'ignition control module' part. Which, by the way, we replaced about two years ago. So, we leave my car there for the weekend, and on Monday Kelly orders the part. $100. Not great...but hey, if it fixes it, okay. Well....so my wonderful father in law picks up the part for us and installs it....and the car....still won't start. Seriously. I so knew that would happen. Luckily, Kelly has a mechanic for a cousin-in-law (unluckily, he lives 4 hrs away and therefore can only do diagnostics over the phone for us)...who tells us its probably the timing belt. Okay, so we'll get it towed to a mechanic, they can put a new one on and we'll be on our way, right? Oh, did I mention we are supposed to drive to Indianapolis on Friday? About a 4 hr drive. Call the mechanic today...oh, we can't look at it until the end of the week. Awesome. It gets better though...they tell me they don't think my car even HAS a timing belt. Oh yeah. Kelly is calling his cousin mechanic now to figure out what the heck else might be going on....and we need to figure out where to take this thing!! Oh yeah, and how to get to Indy on Friday!! In the meantime, I am driving the farm truck to work. What a picture I am in that! haha So while we are trying to get this thing FIXED...we are also seriously considering buying a new car. Kelly is afraid that mine will leave me and the baby stranded somewhere and obviously that would not be a good thing. The bummer is, we just got it paid off this past year. Of course, we keep pouring money into it so we haven't been able to really enjoy the lack of a car payment anyway. I am just hesitant to get a new car payment...knowing that we are going to have so many new expenses coming up soon (daycare, diapers, etc) but at the same time, I like the idea of a new, reliable vehicle with a warranty and all that good stuff. And if you're going to buy a car, now's the time to do it...with the car companies struggling to sell anything and all. What to do?? If we do get a new car...we are considering either a Ford Escape (which I wanted when I bought my current car) or have also looked a little bit at the Ford Fusions. Anyone know anything about either of these?? Or something comparable?

On a good note. Dr's appointment this morning. Everything is good. Measuring right on time, baby's heartbeat was 148 this morning. I have to go in for my glucose screening in the next two weeks. Not really looking forward to that, but gotta get it out of the way. Next appointment is in 3 weeks..they're getting closer together, that must mean we're getting closer to the big day, yikes!! So much to do, so little time!!

And yes, I will elaborate on the milking parlor thing, I promise I didn't forget!!

Christmas (or New Years?) Pictures

Every year I insist on doing a "Christmas family picture", which includes obviously Kelly and me...and then Henry and Annabelle. I have a feeling next year, we might not make the pets participate (or at least not Annabelle-since someone has to hold onto her for dear life otherwise, she'd never be in it), judging by some of the outtakes over the last few years with the pets...I think adding an 8 1/2 month old baby in there might just be too much to try to get a decent picture out of! We'll see though. :)

Anyway, Christmas 2008 (ok, New Years 2009..we took these today, don't tell anyone!)

Doesn't it look like Annabelle is trying to attack Henry? And like Kelly is choking Henry. I promise, neither of those things are actually happening! Can you believe this is the best picture we got? Yep, picture taking with pets is fun. Ha ha!

And, I don't think I've done any "belly pictures" on here yet (I've been taking them, just not posting)...but here's this week's just for fun!

26 1/2 weeks

Yes, the top of my head is cut off...behold the picture-taking skills of my amazing husband. I told him he needs to work on the picture taking thing because that is a dad's job. I think I might get stuck with picture duty once the baby's here...bummer since I am someone who carries my camera around and then forgets to actually TAKE any pictures. Oops.

This afternoon we're going to look at a milking parlor. Yep. A topic that deserves a post of its own, for sure. I go back and forth between hmm.."Ok, might be a good idea, it might work" and "WHAT?! You want to do WHAT?!" More to come on that...
